Nickel metal hydride batteries are highly economical, allow
for a large number of charging/discharging cycles, and are possible
to fast charge within an hour with a special charger. They come
in various button and cylindrical cell sizes. Nickel metal hydride
cells are 1.2 volts (nominal) and generally have 30-40% more
capacity than a similar-sized nickel cadmium cell. The energy
density by weight is 60-80 Wh/kg. The cells are good for 500
cycles. They self discharge at about 30% per month and have
an operational temperature range of -20 degrees C to +60 degrees
C.
Common applications for the nickel metal hydride
batteries are radios, emergency lighting, medical equipment,
and memory backup power for cameras, cellular phones, and
computers.
